Phillip Dees

Founder / Chief Instructor — 3rd Degree Black Belt, American Freestyle Karate

Hi, I’m Philip — founder and head instructor here at Charleston Family Martial Arts. I’ve been training in martial arts since I was 10 years old and have spent the last 8 years focused on American Freestyle Karate, earning my 3rd degree black belt. I’ve competed in everything from traditional forms to kickboxing, and I bring that experience into every class I teach. My goal isn’t just to build better martial artists — it’s to help students of all ages grow in confidence, discipline, and self-belief. Before opening the dojo, I served six years in the United States Marine Corps, where I earned a black belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP). Teaching is my passion, and I’m grateful every day to help families train together, grow stronger, and support each other on and off the mat.

Emily Lyon

Founder / Program Director — 3rd Degree Black Belt, American Freestyle Karate

Emily has been training in American Freestyle Karate since she was 15 years old, starting alongside her family and never looking back. Now a 3rd degree black belt and experienced competitor in forms, weapons, and kickboxing, Emily brings both skill and heart to every class she leads. As Program Director, she focuses on making sure each student feels seen, supported, and challenged in the right ways. Emily is especially known for her connection with younger students — blending structure, encouragement, and patience to help them grow in confidence and discipline. Her goal isn’t just to teach great technique, but to help students become stronger versions of themselves, on and off the mat.
